I think that they both influenced Will but in different ways. Bear had more of an influence on helping Will to mature as a person. He helped Will to develop the strong ties that he had to the tribe, caring enough about them to go and fight for their right to stay on their land. Featherstone Influnced Will in a different way. He showed Will the life of the affluent and how money can influence the outcome. I much prefer Bears influence to Featherstones.
To add to Martha's opinion:
I agree that Bear had a greater influence on Will than Featherstone. This could be one of the reasons he did not leave with Claire to the West.He had bonded with Bear, and felt obligated to tarry with him come shine come shower.
I find what Queen Nyasha said interested because even though we all bond with our parents, we usually do leave them for our "love", usually through marriage. But I guess since Claire was already married, Will did not have this option and thus the bond with Bear was greater. Hmmm...
My gut instinct is that of everyone else, that Bear was indeed the greatest influence. But that is the easy answer. Featherstone was the first Native American that Will became close to. Featherstone introduced him to Claire, albeit, indirectly. Featherstone was wealthy and Will certainly grew up "dirt poor" but pursued wealth his entire life. Now Bear was surely the "Father" that Will had the strongest relationship with, who adopted Will into the tribe/the clan that gave him his familial identity and they spent their lives together most of the time. Bear walked right up to Will when he first came to that God forsaken outpost as an indentured servant and Bear never really left his side. Featherstone shared literary journals and the written word with Will which he was fascinated with during the whole of his life. I also wonder if Will's tendency towards land speculation and his high degree of risk taking was not partly a result from Feathersone's initial influence on him. Certainly Will's love for the pastoral lifestyle, his passion for the land and the Native American way of life was influenced more by Bear.
I think that Bear was definitely more influential and certainly in a more positive way.
