I believe that Will is in love with the concept of rescuing Claire. Falling in love when seeing a person once at the age of 12 and then having that person become the one and only for the rest of your life I find hard to fathom. I do believe in love at first sight, but to dedicate myself to a person that I can’t have and leaving myself lonely for the rest of my life I find hard to understand. I really feel that he has used Claire as an excuse to not get involved with other women for more than a “passing fancy”.
That's an interesting thought. I wasn't sure about Claire's feelings for Will. But then again, in today’s world where divorce is so common, we often don't think about what it was like to live in a time where it was not commonly done. And even though Claire was very young when she was married to Featherstone, she was married and had a commitment to fill.
But would it have been much different today. There are still people who believe that marriage is for life. I do think those people though would not have had an affair like Claire did.
I believe that Will is in love with the idea of Claire, not the "real" Claire, which is why he was never able to commit to her and left her when he had multiple opportunities to stay. He subconsciously knew that she could never live up to his idealized image.
I think that first love can be so intense that it diminishes and changes expectations for other relationships. For Claire and Will, I don't think a normal relationship can be expected or realized. I think they both are clinging to their youth through each other.
